Short Story
71% of our earth’s surface is covered in water. Yet, one out of three people on the planet does not have access to clean drinking water. These significant global and local challenges occur from many circumstances. One of them is that 96,5% of that water is found in our oceans and is saturated with salt and undrinkable. Most of the freshwater is locked away in glaciers or deep underground. Less than 1% is available to us.
So why can’t we just take all that seawater, filter out the salt and have nearly an unlimited supply of clean drinkable water? For anyone, anywhere, at any time? OceansX launches Xploration Coastline to achieve these goals through open innovation, and we need your support to accelerate progress.
Support Operational Costs to Unleash the Potential of Xploration Coastline
A mobile source of fresh water for vulnerable populations
Xploration Coastline is a floating desalination plant producing >1000m3 of fresh water every day with the support of four types of renewable energy sources. It converts seawater into fresh water while being remotely monitored and controlled. Coastline can be anchored in shallow waters or stationed in deep waters further off-shore. It serves as a living lab with a global network that helps vulnerable communities and ecosystems. Living labs are a variant of the experiential learning model that involves concrete experience followed by observation, reflection and the formation of new concepts and testing in new situations.
Xploration Coastline is a rapid response (easy to relocate) freshwater solution serving Human Relief Operators (HRO) such as Unicef, WHO, PAHO and armed forces to execute their missions to globally support coastal communities with essential resources and critical infrastructures like healthcare and agriculture –– enabling them to diminish suffering from acute and persistent water stress and scarcity.
To accelerate the technological capacities, sustainable impact and scaling-up of Coastline, we need the support of donors like you to cover the operational costs required to mobilize these efforts. Your donation and/or partnership can enhance our organizational support for the project and its living labs, PR, global campaigns and fundraising. With the support of change-makers, we can unleash the potential of people, sustainability, tech and global cooperation networks that concentrate on innovating to responsibly help vulnerable populations and ecosystems.

Challenges ahead that Xploration Coastline can help overcome
ACUTE WATER STRESS – Natural disasters like hurricanes, droughts, heat waves and earthquakes cause acute water stress. In general, this stress results in more human suffering than the disaster itself. Consequently, restoring the water provision is amongst the top priorities of every initial phase of humanitarian relief operations. However, although the recurrence of natural disasters and their negative impact on communities in vulnerable regions are known, adequate quick response resiliency measures have not been implemented.
PERSISTENT WATER STRESS AND SCARCITY – 2.2 billion people lack access to safely managed drink water services. The expected population growth, the uneven distribution of that growing population and climate change will further increase persistent water stress and scarcity. We need to overcome persistent stress and scarcity with innovative sustainable (zero footprint and autonomous) water sources.
Mission
With Xploration Coastline, OceansX takes on the mission to provide HRO’s with a floating freshwater plant before the end of 2022 to tackle water stress and scarcity. At the same time, we drive Xploration Coastline’s open innovation roadmap to get to a zero footprint and scale the freshwater output beyond 1000m3 by 2030.
Xploration Coastline – driving a decade of change
Our floating desalination plant has the potential to become an innovative standard that guarantees coastal communities access to safely managed water for up to 6000 people. Xploration Coastline’s modular build will enable the transformation to an autonomous, zero emission and zero footprint version in the coming decade.
Constructing a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) version will support humanitarian relief operations globally. Simultaneously, a physical twin of this COTS version is developed to serve as a living lab that facilitates mission-driven, open innovation to systematically reduce the footprint and add scale. The living lab is mobile and will call into ports in coastal cities across Europe, the Caribbean and Africa, facilitating the integration of new technologies. It also creates opportunities to share knowledge, raise awareness around water and build new partnerships. By doing so, Xploration Coastline addresses the entire quadruple helix – inspiring and connecting end-users, businesses, (non-)governmental bodies and knowledge institutions globally.
Xploration Coastline expedites a decade of change by focusing on the necessary integration of systems. It unleashes the soft power (human potential) needed to bridge the gap between policy and impact while enhancing our resilience and uniting our world.
